What you need:

The best part about making homemade pear cider is that you can adapt the recipe to suit your tastes. For example, if you like a sweeter cider, add more sugar. If you prefer a stronger flavor, use more spices. The possibilities are endless and it's easy to make it your own!

  • Water (Fill large pot or slow cooker 3/4 of the way)

  • 2 cups brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (Or a couple of cinnamon sticks if you prefer) These add a warm spiciness that pairs well with the pears' natural sweetness.

  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 teaspoon allspice berries or ground allspice. This spice is similar to cloves in flavor, but lighter and more aromatic—a perfect companion for the other flavors in this cider recipe!

  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 8-10 pears (depending on size) - peeled and cut into halves or quarters (peels can be saved for making pear puree or using in other recipes)

  • Juice from 1 orange - about 2 tablespoons

Optional: Ginger slices or chunks of ginger root (fresh or dried). If using fresh ginger root, mince it into small pieces first before adding it to your cider mixture; dried ginger slices can go right into the pot whole without being minced first.
