Vinegar is a popular natural cleaning product, but did you know you can use it in your laundry to soften clothes?
If you're looking to change out your laundry routine with natural alternatives, using white vinegar is a good place to start.
How does it work? Vinegar contains acetic acid, which dissolves dirt and grime from fabrics. It also has antibacterial properties, which means that it can kill off germs without damaging your clothing. This makes vinegar an excellent choice for people who are sensitive to harsh chemicals or who want an alternative to traditional fabric softeners or detergents that contain synthetic fragrances or other additives.
Here are three ways you can level up your laundry game with white vinegar
If you're looking for a stain remover, try vinegar!
You can loosen stains by creating a solution of 1 cup distilled white vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Then, pour the solution onto the affected area and work it into the stain before washing the clothing normally.
To use vinegar as a fabric softener, pour a half-cup of distilled white vinegar into the detergent or fabric softener compartment during the final rinse cycle. If you don't have a compartment you should dilute ½ cup of vinegar with a cup of water to pour directly on your laundry.
To create a solution that will brighten your clothes, combine half a cup of distilled white vinegar, half a cup of lemon juice and a tablespoon of borax and add the solution to the washing machine. If you prefer, you can also soak your clothes in this solution for 30 minutes in a container before putting them in your washing machine.
Adding vinegar to your wash can be a huge game-changer for laundry, but there are some things to keep in mind when you're using vinegar
When using vinegar in your washing machine, stick to ¼ - ½ cups. Vinegar is acidic, so if it's left on for too long, it can break down the fibers of the fabric and cause them to look faded or worn out sooner than expected.
White vinegar is a great way to add a little extra cleaning power to your laundry. But if you just dump it directly on your clothes, it can cause some damage.
It’s important to add the white vinegar while your clothes are on the rinse cycle. If you have an high-efficiency washing machine and are unable to open your washer door you, just need to add the vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser.
