The Routine I Use to Keep Closets and Drawers Smelling Naturally Clean

There's a specific kind of disappointment that comes from opening a dresser drawer and having your freshly laundered shirt immediately absorb the smell of... drawer.

You washed it. You folded it nicely. You put it away like a functional adult.

And then it sat in there for two weeks and picked up that particular closed, slightly stale scent that wood and enclosed spaces do so well.

I used to reach for dryer sheets. Tuck one in the back of every drawer, replace it every few months. It worked in a blunt sort of way.

Then I started reading labels.

Most dryer sheets and conventional drawer sachets use phthalates and synthetic fragrance compounds to deliver their scent. Which means your clothes are sitting in prolonged contact with those ingredients โ€” for weeks at a time, in something you wear close to your skin.

That didn't sit right with me.

We made Grow because we wanted our homes to smell intentional, all the way down to the details most people overlook. Drawers and closets are very much on that list.

Here are the three methods I actually use: from the quick everyday spray to the trick that runs quietly in the background for weeks.

Why Drawers and Closets Smell the Way They Do

Closets and drawers are enclosed, low-airflow spaces.

Fabric absorbs ambient scent over time. And when that ambient scent is stale wood, dust, or whatever your closet has been quietly collecting for years โ€” it transfers.

Slowly. Quietly. Relentlessly.

The fix isn't complicated. You just have to address the right thing: the fabric, and the space itself โ€” not the air above it.

Method 1: Direct Fabric Misting

This is the fastest option and the one I reach for most.

Before closing a drawer or hanging clothes back up, a light mist of Grow Fragrance Air + Fabric Spray directly on clothing or soft drawer liners makes an immediate difference.

  • Hold the bottle 10 to 12 inches away and apply a soft, even pass
  • Focus on fabric liners, knit items, or anything stored for longer periods
  • Let clothing air for a minute before folding or hanging
  • A spritz or two into the back of the closet itself keeps the whole space fresh

It takes about 30 seconds.

You open the drawer and it just smells clean and considered. Like someone actually thought about it.

Which you did.

๐Ÿ’ก Do this on laundry day, before everything goes away. The scent settles into folded clothes as they sit and releases a little every time you open the drawer. It's a small ritual that makes getting dressed feel genuinely nice.

Method 2: The Felt Pad Trick

This one is my secret weapon for drawers and storage bins.

Especially for clothing that sits for longer stretches โ€” seasonal pieces, anything in storage, the drawer you only open once a month.

Grab a few adhesive felt furniture pads. The kind you'd put under chair legs to protect your floors. They're inexpensive, widely available, and they happen to be perfect for this.

Spray them generously with Grow spray. Let them dry completely. Then place one in each drawer or on a closet shelf.

  • Spray the felt pad and let it dry fully before placing near clothing
  • Tuck one per drawer, against the back or side, not directly under folded items
  • For closet shelves, stick one to the underside of the shelf above so it diffuses downward
  • Recharge every 2 to 3 weeks with a quick mist โ€” felt holds scent well and refreshes easily

Felt is porous. It holds fragrance molecules in a way that smooth surfaces don't.

It becomes a slow-release scent source working quietly in the background for weeks. A non-toxic, plant-based sachet that you actually control.

๐Ÿ’ก This same trick works in the bottom of a trash can, inside shoe storage boxes, and in gym bags. Once you have felt pads around, you'll find a lot of uses for them.

Method 3: The Hanging Closet Refresh

Woman organizing clothes in a closet with hangers and shelves.

For walk-in closets or larger wardrobe spaces, a quick pass along the whole hanging section refreshes everything at once.

  • Hold the bottle about 12 inches from the garments and keep it moving โ€” no single item gets too much
  • Give extra attention to heavier fabrics: wool coats, sweaters, denim โ€” these hold odor more than lighter items
  • A quick mist on the back wall or any fabric storage bins finishes the job
  • Leave the closet door open for 5 minutes to let air circulate before closing

One more thing worth mentioning: we love hanging a Grow car freshener inside a larger closet.

It's designed to hang and release scent gradually. Which makes it a surprisingly perfect closet companion.

It's one of our favorite suggestions that always gets people the first time they hear it.

Best Scents for Closets and Drawers

For clothing storage, we lean toward clean and soft. Nothing too heavy or sweet that becomes overwhelming in an enclosed space over time.

  • Linen โ€” The obvious choice and genuinely the best one. Clean, airy, exactly what laundry is supposed to smell like. Your clothes will smell like they just came out of the wash, indefinitely. We use this one constantly.
  • Cucumber Aloe โ€” Soft, green, and fresh. Light enough for an enclosed space without ever feeling like too much. A great pick for drawers specifically.
  • Green Tea Matcha โ€” Crisp and clean with a herbal edge. Works beautifully for closets, especially seasonal storage where you want something that stays pleasant over a longer period.
  • Woodland Sage โ€” Earthy and grounding. A slightly bolder pick that works especially well in walk-in closets where the space is large enough to carry it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to refresh?

Direct fabric misting: once a week or whenever you do laundry. The felt pad method: every 2 to 3 weeks, just a few spritzes to recharge. The hanging closet method: weekly or as needed. None of these take more than a minute once you're in the habit.

Will the spray stain clothes or fabric liners?

Our sprays are water-based and dry clean with no residue when applied as a light mist. One thing worth noting: scents with naturally deeper color (like Snowscape) carry a small risk on very light or delicate fabrics. For the felt pad method, always let the pad dry fully before placing near clothing.

Is this safe for delicate fabrics like silk or cashmere?

For very delicate fabrics, test a small hidden area first and use an especially light application from a greater distance. For the felt pad method, place the pad on the wall or underside of a shelf rather than directly touching delicate garments โ€” the scent reaches everything in the space without direct contact.

How is this different from dryer sheets in drawers?

Most dryer sheets use phthalates and synthetic fragrance compounds โ€” meaning your clothes are in prolonged contact with those ingredients for weeks at a time. Our spray is 100% plant-based and free from petrochemical synthetic fragrance and phthalates. You're also in full control of the scent level, which a dryer sheet sitting in a drawer for weeks simply can't give you.

Will the scent transfer to my skin when I wear the clothes?

At the level of a light mist allowed to fully dry, no. The scent settles into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it. What you'll notice is a subtle freshness when you shake out a garment or open the drawer โ€” not a fragrance that follows you around all day. Unless you want that, in which case a slightly more generous application on the item itself will do it.

Small Detail. Big Difference.

Getting dressed in the morning in a closet that smells clean and good is one of those small daily pleasures that's so easy to have.

And so easy to overlook.

We made Grow for exactly these kinds of moments. The ones that don't seem like a big deal until they're right every day and you realize you notice.
